The Feldenkrais Method® – Learning Through Movement

A book to read—and to experience

The Feldenkrais Method®: Learning Through Movement explores the remarkable breadth, depth, and contemporary relevance of the Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education.

Co-edited by Staffan Elgelid and Chrish Kresge, the book brings together 26 internationally respected practitioners, teachers, researchers, and movement professionals. Collectively, they illuminate both the principles of the Method and its wide-ranging applications in fields including physical therapy and rehabilitation, dance, music, theatre, yoga, Pilates, sports coaching, martial arts, working with children, and neurological recovery.

What makes this book especially distinctive is that it is not intended to be read passively. Every chapter includes a QR code linking to an audio recording or video created by that chapter’s contributor. These guided Feldenkrais® lessons and demonstrations allow readers to move beyond the written word and experience the ideas directly through their own movement, attention, and sensory awareness.

Beautifully designed and richly illustrated, Learning Through Movement is both an accessible introduction for those encountering the Feldenkrais Method for the first time and a substantial resource for practitioners, movement educators, therapists, performers, and anyone interested in how human beings learn, adapt, and change.

I am immensely proud to have co-edited this beautiful and unusual book. Nearly three years in the making, it brings together some of the most thoughtful and experienced voices in the international Feldenkrais community—and invites readers not only to read about the Method, but to experience it for themselves.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO FEEL, MOVE, AND LOOK BETTER?

The Feldenkrais Method® might be the answer for you! Feldenkrais is a mental and physical improvement system based on discovering natural, easy, efficient and pleasurable ways of moving your mind and body. It is an advanced educational approach to well-being using your brain’s amazing capacity to reorganize yourself.

It is based on the premise that all human beings have the potential to learn to do everything they do in easier, less effortful and more satisfying ways than is their habit. The particular way a person is “organized” to sit, stand, walk, run or speak in public, etc., reflects that person’s inner state, or their self-image. Human beings have a tendency to acquire subtle and sometimes damaging physical and mental habits of functioning which can become deeply ingrained. Some habits are useful – many are not. The Feldenkrais Method® can facilitate change by creating the awareness you need to alter those habits which don’t serve you well.
